Solfatara

Solfatara, Pozzuoli

Solfatara is a volcanic crater that whilst classified as dormant (last eruption in 1198) continues to splutter sulfurous gases from numerous fumeroles dotted around the flat crater bed and which turn  the rocks yellow. We placed our hands near one fumerole …. very hot! La Bocca Grande are the larger vents and steam at 160 degrees celsius; we kept our distance!
